“First a solution on the name issue, then an invitation to NATO” says Rasmussen

February 17, 2012

In an interview given to the Greek newspaper Ta Nea and TV station Mega, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, Secretay General of NATO, repeated that a solution to the name issue must be found before an invitation to join the NATO alliance be extended to the government in Skopje, as per the 2008 decision of the alliance.

The transcription of hs interview concerning the name issue from the video is as follows:

We made a very clear decision in 2008 at the NATO summit in Bucharest and we decided that we are prepared to start accession negotiations with Skopje once a mutually satisfactory solution to the name issue has been found. So once the name dispute has been solved, we are ready to start accession negotiations with the government in Skopje. That decision still stands. But as we all know no solution has yet been found as regards the name issue. I encourage all parties involved o do the utmost to solve this problem. Because I think it is in the interest of Greece and it is also in the interest of the Alliance to see all countries in the Western Balkans integrated in all Euro-Atlantic structures, in the E.U. and in NATO.
